Voghera lies in the province of Pavia, where the flat Po plain meets the first hills of the Oltrepò Pavese. The historic centre is a compact core of streets around the cathedral of San Lorenzo, with later neighbourhoods spreading outward in a more regular pattern. The Staffora river runs past the eastern side of town on its way north toward the Po.
The town has long been an important railway junction, where lines toward Milan, Turin, Genoa and Piacenza meet, and the tracks and yards form a strong band on the map. The Castello Visconteo, a square medieval fortress, stands by the old centre. In Italian, the phrase la casalinga di Voghera, the housewife of Voghera, became shorthand for the ordinary reader or voter.
A Voghera map poster shows the balance between these elements: rail lines fanning out, the river's gentle curve, the tight historic core and the fields beginning just beyond the newer streets. Seen in black and white, the town reads as a clear example of a northern Italian crossroads, modest in size but precisely placed.

Historic core
A dense cluster of streets around the Duomo di San Lorenzo and the Castello Visconteo marks the medieval heart, tighter than the districts around it.
Staffora river
The river comes down from the Apennines and passes the town on its eastern side, a thin winding line bordered by fields and riverside vegetation.
