Wedi lies in Klaten Regency, on the broad agricultural plain that stretches between Yogyakarta and Surakarta in Central Java. From above it is not a single compact town but a network of villages, each a dense cluster of roofs and trees, separated by irrigated fields. Narrow roads link them in a loose mesh, and small watercourses carry runoff from the volcanic uplands to the north.
Mount Merapi, one of Indonesia's most active volcanoes, stands some distance to the north-west, and its ash has shaped the fertile soils that make this plain so intensively farmed.
