Wetteren is a municipality in East Flanders, Belgium, on the Scheldt between Ghent and Dendermonde. From above, the river is the defining element: it swings through the municipality in wide bends, and the historic centre sits close to its banks, with streets fanning out from the market square.
Beyond the centre, the map takes on the familiar Flemish pattern of long roads lined with houses, known as ribbon development, reaching out across flat farmland toward neighbouring villages. Railway lines and major roads toward Ghent and Brussels cut across the landscape in straight strokes. Wetteren is also known for its horse racing track.
