Wolfenbüttel Map Poster & Print
Wolfenbüttel lies on the Oker river in Lower Saxony, just south of Braunschweig. For about three centuries it was the residence of the Dukes of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, and the map still shows it. The Schloss sits within water, arms of the Oker and old moat channels thread through the centre, and a regular grid marks the Heinrichstadt, which is considered one of the earliest planned towns in Germany.
The town's best-known institution is the Herzog August Library, a renowned collection of early modern books and manuscripts where Gotthold Ephraim Lessing worked as librarian. The old town has one of the largest ensembles of half-timbered houses in Germany. Wolfenbüttel is also the home of the Jägermeister company, which was founded here.
A Wolfenbüttel map poster brings these layers together. The castle island, the watercourses and the straight streets of the planned quarter sit side by side, surrounded by the looser pattern of later growth. In black and white, the town reads like an architectural drawing of a Renaissance residence, precise, balanced and quietly detailed.

Heinrichstadt grid
Laid out in the sixteenth century, this quarter has straight, regular streets. It stands out as an early example of deliberate town planning in Germany.
Oker channels
Branches of the Oker and former defensive waterways wind through and around the centre and add soft, curving lines to the orderly street plan.
