A Estrada is one of the larger rural municipalities in Galicia, in the interior of the province of Pontevedra. The town itself is compact and sits on relatively level upland, with a modest grid of streets around its centre. Around it, a wide area of small hamlets, fields and woodland spreads out in every direction, which is typical of inland Galicia.
The River Ulla runs along the northern edge of the municipality and forms part of the boundary with the province of A Coruña. Across the rest of the area, the settlement is dispersed: many small parishes, each a cluster of houses linked by narrow country roads.
