The town is compact, and from above it looks like a tight cluster of blocks set down in a wide landscape of fields, with a handful of roads leaving it towards neighbouring communes. The first word of its name, Aïn, means spring in Arabic, a reminder of how settlements here grew around water.
The surrounding plateau is cereal country, and seasonal watercourses cut shallow lines through the fields around the town.
