From above, the town is a compact grid of streets surrounded by wide agricultural land, where field boundaries are softer and more scattered than the dense block pattern at the centre. The name begins with Aïn, the Arabic word for a spring, a prefix shared by many towns across the region and a reminder of how water shaped settlement on these plains.
