The Euphrates
The river runs past the town and dominates the composition. Its broad channel gives the map a strong line that everything else, from roads to fields, seems to follow.

Al Madīnah Map Poster & Print
Al Madīnah lies in Basra Governorate in southern Iraq, in the flat country along the lower Euphrates. From above, the land is almost perfectly level, and the map is shaped more by water than by relief. The town's streets gather near the river, while irrigation channels and field boundaries extend outward in long, straight strokes across the plain.
This part of Iraq sits close to the Mesopotamian Marshes, the wetlands of the Tigris and Euphrates that are listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage site. The wider region has been farmed and settled for thousands of years, and date palms remain a defining feature of the landscape. On the map, cultivated land appears as a finely divided texture around the built-up area.
An Al Madīnah map poster is quieter than a map of a large city. Its appeal is in the relationship between the river, the settlement and the network of canals and roads around it. Rendered in fine black lines, the layout becomes an abstract pattern of water and land that still reads clearly as a real place.

Irrigation lines
Straight channels and field edges spread across the flat land around the town, forming a fine, regular texture that looks almost geometric in a black and white print.
Marsh country
The town belongs to the wider wetland region of southern Iraq, where the Tigris and Euphrates approach one another and water shapes much of the land.
