Alberton Map Poster & Print
Alberton lies on the southern side of Gauteng's main urban area, just south-east of Johannesburg, and is part of the Ekurhuleni metropolitan municipality. From above it is a classic Highveld suburb: a compact commercial centre, then wide areas of residential streets that curve into crescents and cul-de-sacs, cut through by major highways and rail lines that link the region together.
The town was founded in 1904 and named after General Hendrik Alberts. It grew steadily through the twentieth century as Johannesburg's industry and population expanded. Today it is a mostly residential city of shopping centres and sports grounds, with a strong Afrikaans community heritage alongside newer, more diverse neighbourhoods.
An Alberton map poster reveals the patterns of South African suburban planning: the rhythm of looping residential roads, the straighter lines of the older centre and the bold strokes of the freeways. Without colour, the parks, sports fields and open spaces between neighbourhoods give the composition room to breathe, and the whole map reads as a clear portrait of a Highveld town.

Highway corridors
Major freeways run along and through the city. Their strong straight lines separate neighbourhoods and connect Alberton to Johannesburg and the wider Ekurhuleni area.
Older centre
The original town centre follows a more regular grid of streets, a compact core that stands out against the softer curves of the suburbs around it.
