'Alī Ābād-e Katūl lies in Golestan province in northern Iran, on the narrow strip of land between the wooded northern slopes of the Alborz mountains and the plains that stretch toward the Caspian lowlands. From above, the town is a long, fairly dense settlement with a main road running through it, parallel to the line of the mountains.
The forests that rise just south of town are part of the Hyrcanian woodland that covers the northern Alborz. The area is known for walking and nature trips, including the Kabudval waterfall in the nearby hills, and the map shows how quickly the streets give way to rising ground.
