Amlash sits in eastern Gilan, in the narrow green belt between the Caspian Sea and the Alborz mountains in northern Iran. From above, the town is a small, dense cluster of streets on low ground, with rural roads fanning out toward villages, farmland and the forested hills rising to the south.
This part of Iran is humid and green, and the land around Amlash is worked intensively. Paddy fields lie on the flatter ground and tea gardens are common on the slopes. On a black-and-white map that farmland falls away to blank paper, leaving the lines of the town and its roads clearly visible.
