Aramboli is in Kanyakumari district, the southernmost part of Tamil Nadu, close to where the last ridges of the Western Ghats meet the flat country leading down to the tip of the peninsula. On a map, the settlement is small and compact, with streets gathered along its main road and the ground around it shifting quickly from slope to open field.
This stretch of land sits near the Aralvaimozhi gap, a low pass through the hills that has long carried traffic between Nagercoil and Tirunelveli. The winds funnelled through the gap have made the surrounding area one of India's best-known sites for wind farms, and on the ground turbines stand in long rows across the fields.
