Town against open land
The built-up area stops fairly abruptly, so the edge of Ataq is clearly readable. Dense streets give way to open terrain, which gives the poster a strong, simple outline.

Ataq Map Poster & Print
Ataq is the administrative centre of Shabwah Governorate in southern Yemen, a town set on high, arid ground well inland from the Gulf of Aden coast. On a map it reads as a small, dense cluster of streets surrounded by wide empty terrain, and that contrast between built grain and open land is what gives it its character from above.
The street pattern is irregular rather than planned, with lanes that bend around older blocks and roads that reach out towards neighbouring settlements across the plateau. Seasonal watercourses leave faint traces on the land around it, and the main routes into town show up as the strongest lines on the sheet. A Ataq map poster keeps all of this in plain black ink on white.
Because the town is small, the map does not need to crop out much. The whole settlement fits comfortably on the page with room left for the surrounding ground, so the poster shows Ataq as it actually sits in its landscape: a single point of density in a wide, quiet region. It is a spare composition, and it works best that way.

Roads across the plateau
The routes linking Ataq with the rest of Shabwah run out from the centre as long, confident lines, anchoring the town within its much wider regional setting.
Irregular old grain
Near the centre the lanes are short and uneven, following older plots rather than a grid. In black and white this texture reads as fine, closely packed detail.

Zakaj Ataq
Zemljevid, ki nekaj pomeni
People hang a map of Ataq because it is home, or was once, and few objects hold a place as plainly as its streets. The layout of a town you grew up in carries memory without needing any photographs, and the quiet style suits that.
You can personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line, for example with a family name or a year, and choose one of five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Sand in particular suits the desert setting.
