Bad Berleburg lies in the Wittgensteiner Land, in the forested hills of the Rothaar Mountains in southern Westphalia. The old town climbs a ridge toward Berleburg Castle, and its streets follow the slope in tight curves. Around it, the valleys hold smaller settlements, while dense forest covers most of the surrounding land and dominates any wider map.
The castle has been the seat of the Princes of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg for centuries and is still home to the family. The town is also a Kneipp spa, known for water treatments and walks in the clean mountain air. Its municipal area is one of the largest in North Rhine-Westphalia.
