Barinitas lies in Barinas state, at the point where the Andes begin to fall toward the vast plains of the Venezuelan llanos. From above, the town sits on gently sloping ground, with its streets arranged mainly in a grid. Mountain ridges rise to the northwest, and rivers and streams leave the highlands to cross the lower land around the town.
The town is on the route that climbs from the plains of Barinas up into the Andes toward Mérida. Roads lead one way into the mountains and the other way down toward the state capital. The surrounding foothill country is green and agricultural, with farmland and patches of forest spreading across the lower slopes.
