Lagoon islands
The old town centre sits on an island within the lagoon, and the water around it gives the map an unusual, broken outline full of curves and inlets.

Batticaloa Map Poster & Print
Batticaloa sits on the east coast of Sri Lanka, where a long lagoon runs parallel to the Indian Ocean behind a thin barrier of land. From above, the town is broken into pieces by water. The old centre occupies an island in the lagoon, joined to the surrounding shores by bridges and causeways, while the sea coast lies a short distance to the east.
On the island stands the old fort, first built by the Portuguese and then taken and rebuilt by the Dutch in the seventeenth century, its walls still partly bordered by water. The lagoon is known for its so-called singing fish, a faint sound heard from the water on calm nights that has become a local emblem, especially around the bridges.
A Batticaloa map poster turns this watery geography into a striking composition. The irregular outline of the lagoon, the small islands and the bridges between them create a pattern quite unlike a typical city grid. Along the coast, the straight line of the shore provides contrast, and roads lead north and south along the narrow land between lagoon and sea.

Dutch fort
The old fort stands at the water's edge, its compact, angular shape set apart from the softer lines of the lagoon shore around it.
Bridges and causeways
Crossings link the island centre with the mainland and the coastal strip, drawn on the map as short, strong lines across the water.
