Belaga lies deep in the interior of Sarawak, on the upper Rajang river, one of the longest rivers in Malaysia. On a map the Rajang dominates everything: a broad, brown channel winding through dense rainforest, with the small town gathered on its bank. The built-up area is modest, a few streets and a bazaar, with longhouse communities scattered along the river beyond.
For much of its history Belaga was reached mainly by boat, with travellers passing the Pelagus rapids downstream on the way from Kapit. The river remains the main line of the landscape, and most settlement follows its banks. The population figure covers a large surrounding district, home to Kayan, Kenyah and other Orang Ulu communities.
