Bell Ville lies in the south-east of Córdoba province, in the open farming plain that stretches toward Santa Fe. Its street plan follows the regular square blocks typical of Argentine towns that grew with the railway. The river running through it bends that pattern, though, and gives the town a more irregular edge than many of its neighbours on the plain.
The river is known locally as the Ctalamochita and on older maps as the Río Tercero, and it is lined with a green strip of parkland. Argentines widely remember the town as the place where a football with a sealed valve was developed in the early 1930s. The ball no longer needed external lacing, and the idea changed how footballs were made.
