The central circle around King's Square anchors the city. Major streets fan out from it towards the edges of the map like the spokes of a wheel.

Benin City Map Poster & Print
Benin City, capital of Edo State in southern Nigeria, has one of the most legible city centres in West Africa. Major roads meet at a central circle around King's Square, known locally as the Ring Road, and from there they run outward like spokes. On a map this radial core is immediately recognisable, with denser neighbourhoods filling the wedges between the avenues.
The city was the seat of the historic Kingdom of Benin, and the palace of the Oba still stands near the centre. The kingdom was enclosed by vast earthworks known as the Benin moats or walls, and some traces survive in today's city. Its artists produced the celebrated Benin Bronzes, many of which were taken by British forces in 1897.
A Benin City map poster shows how that old centre still organises the modern city. Suburbs spread along the radial roads, and the Ikpoba River cuts a green valley along the eastern side. The plan is clear and strongly composed, and the spokes read well in every style.

Palace quarter
The grounds of the Oba's palace and the traditional guild streets around it remain at the heart of the plan. These include Igun Street, long home to the bronze casters.
Ikpoba valley
The Ikpoba River runs along the east of the city. Its winding course and wooded banks form a natural edge between neighbourhoods and one of the main curves on the map.
