Bergamo is really two cities. The Città Alta, the medieval upper town, sits on a hill ringed by Venetian walls, and its tightly packed streets are enclosed within a clear, fortified outline. Below it, the Città Bassa spreads out across the plain with broader avenues, squares and a more regular layout that grew mostly in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
The walls, built by the Venetian Republic in the sixteenth century, are part of a UNESCO World Heritage listing and are easy to trace on the map as a thick, angular ring. A funicular climbs from the lower town to the upper one, and a second continues higher to San Vigilio. To the north the land rises into the foothills of the Alps.
Bergamo is the birthplace of the composer Gaetano Donizetti, and Piazza Vecchia at the heart of the upper town is one of Italy's finest squares. A Bergamo map poster shows both halves of the city at once, the walled hilltop and the open plain below.
