Beroun sits on the Berounka river southwest of Prague, where the Litavka joins it. The historic centre is still easy to read from above. It is an oblong core around a long market square, traced by the line of the medieval walls, and two surviving town gates mark the old roads toward Prague and Plzeň.
Around that core the town spreads in layers. Nineteenth-century streets and railway land follow the river, housing estates climb the slopes, and the D5 motorway runs along the edge. Beyond lies the Bohemian Karst, a protected landscape of limestone ridges, quarries and caves whose wooded hollows frame the town on the map.
