Bhinga is a town in Uttar Pradesh and the administrative headquarters of Shravasti district, in the far north of the state near the Nepal border. From above, it is a compact settlement of dense lanes around a central market. Roads lead out across the flat, heavily farmed Gangetic plain, which is divided into small fields and scattered villages.
The district takes its name from Shravasti, an ancient city important in Buddhist and Jain tradition, whose remains lie some distance from the town. Bhinga itself is a local centre for trade, government offices and schools for a largely rural area. Rivers and seasonal streams cross the surrounding plain, and the foothills rise to the north.
