Bishnupur lies in the Bankura district of West Bengal, on red laterite ground at the edge of the Chota Nagpur plateau. The town is known for its large reservoirs, called bandhs, which were dug under the Malla kings. On a map they appear as clean rectangles of water surrounded by lanes and houses, giving the town a very distinctive pattern.
The Malla rulers also built the terracotta temples that made Bishnupur famous: brick shrines covered in carved panels, as well as the stepped Rasmancha and several laterite temples. The town is also known for Baluchari silk saris and for its own school of classical music, the Bishnupur gharana.
