The town sits where the flat, cultivated valley floor meets steep, forested slopes. From above it is a dense network of streets and markets. Fields and coconut groves spread across the plain, and the dark mass of the hills rises to the west.
Bodi has long been a trading centre for cardamom, pepper and other spices grown in the high ranges of Idukki, across the state border. The ghat road to Bodi Mettu climbs from the town in a series of hairpin bends, one of the most striking shapes on the map. From there it continues toward Munnar and the tea estates of Kerala.
