Bou Saâda lies where the High Plateaus of central Algeria give way to the desert. Its name is often translated as "place of happiness". From above, the town clusters along the Oued Bou Saâda, whose gardens and palms make a narrow green band through otherwise dry, rocky ground.
The old ksar is a tight maze of lanes and courtyard houses on the slope above the wadi. Around it, later districts spread in a looser, more regular pattern. The town drew painters in the colonial era, most famously the French Orientalist Étienne Dinet, who settled here and converted to Islam. His house is now a museum.
