The Lanes
A maze of narrow alleys in the old town, the tightest street pattern in Brighton and a surviving trace of the fishing village that came before the resort.

Brighton Map Poster & Print
Brighton lies on the south coast of England, where the chalk hills of the South Downs come down to the English Channel. On the map the seafront forms a long, straight edge running east to west. Behind it the streets rise steeply in parallel lines, with Victorian terraces and squares climbing toward the downs that close off the city to the north.
Brighton grew as a fashionable seaside resort in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, and the Prince Regent built the Royal Pavilion here, with its onion domes and Indian-inspired exterior. The narrow alleys of The Lanes keep the pattern of the old fishing town, while the Regency squares of Kemp Town and Hove show the grander planning that followed.
The Palace Pier still stretches into the sea, the skeleton of the West Pier stands offshore nearby, and the i360 tower rises from the beach beside it. A Brighton map poster captures the promenade, the curving railway viaduct and the dense residential streets on the hills, all held between the downs and the water.

Piers and seafront
The Palace Pier projects into the Channel from a straight shoreline, a sharp perpendicular line that makes the coast immediately recognisable.
London Road Viaduct
The curving railway viaduct crosses the valley north of the centre in a long arc, one of the most elegant lines on the map.
