Bristol sits in the hills of central Connecticut, west of Hartford, along the valley of the Pequabuck River. Its map combines a compact older centre, where streets bend with the river and the rail line, with residential neighbourhoods spreading up the surrounding slopes and around ponds and reservoirs. The terrain keeps the layout irregular, very different from a planned grid.
For much of the nineteenth century Bristol was a centre of American clockmaking, a history kept alive by the American Clock and Watch Museum. Today it is best known as the headquarters of ESPN, whose campus sits on the edge of town, and for Lake Compounce, one of the oldest continuously operating amusement parks in the country.
