Calahorra is in the east of La Rioja, on a rise above the Ebro valley, near the point where the Cidacos river joins the Ebro. It is one of the oldest towns in Spain. As Calagurris it was an important Roman city, and it is traditionally named as the birthplace of the rhetorician Quintilian.
The map shows its history in layers. The old quarter sits on high ground, a tight tangle of streets descending towards the rivers. The cathedral stands on lower ground near the Cidacos. Newer districts extend across the flatter land in a more regular pattern, and irrigated farmland surrounds the whole. Calahorra is known across Spain for its vegetables, especially peppers and other produce from the fertile Ebro plain.
