Arkansas River corridor
The river crosses the map from west to east. It separates the main grid from the southern side of town and gives the composition a strong horizontal line.

Cañon City Map Poster & Print
Cañon City lies in Fremont County, Colorado, where the Arkansas River comes out of the mountains into a wider valley. The river runs west to east through the city, and the street grid sits mostly on its north bank in regular rectangular blocks. Beyond the edges of that grid, the ground rises quickly into hogbacks, mesas and the foothills of the Front Range.
A few miles west, the Arkansas cuts through the Royal Gorge, a narrow canyon crossed by a suspension bridge that is one of the region's best-known sights. The city is also known for its long association with prisons. A territorial prison opened here in the 1870s, before statehood, and several state and federal facilities still operate in the area, along with a museum about that history.
The surrounding hills also hold the Garden Park fossil area, where important dinosaur finds were made in the late nineteenth century. On a Cañon City map poster, the contrast is what stands out: an orderly grid of streets set against the loose, winding line of the river and the empty, rugged ground around it.

Regular street grid
North of the river, straight streets and even blocks form a clear, readable grid, typical of Western towns planned in the nineteenth century around a main commercial street.
Gorge to the west
Toward the western edge the valley narrows sharply as the river heads into the Royal Gorge. Roads thin out there as the ground turns into steep canyon country.

Zakaj Cañon City
Zemljevid, ki nekaj pomeni
Cañon City draws people for rafting, the gorge and the hills, and many families have ties to its long-standing institutions. A map of it makes a restrained keepsake of a place with a strong sense of setting, where the grid and the river say as much as any photograph.
Add a title, a subtitle or a date on the coordinates line, and pick one of five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. The digital HD files cost $9 and cover six print sizes, or you can order a printed poster, framed or unframed.
