Capri covers only about ten square kilometres, but its outline is sharp and unmistakable. The island rises steeply from the Tyrrhenian Sea near the tip of the Sorrento Peninsula. Its coast is almost entirely cliffs, broken by a few coves and harbours. Marina Grande on the north shore is the main arrival point, and a funicular and hairpin roads climb from there to the town of Capri.
The island has two towns: Capri in the east, on the saddle between two highlands, and Anacapri higher up in the west. Monte Solaro, the highest point, rises above Anacapri. Off the southeast coast stand the Faraglioni, three limestone stacks that are among the most photographed rocks in Italy. On the northwest shore is the entrance to the Blue Grotto, reached by small rowing boats.
