Champotón Map Poster & Print
Champotón is a town on the Gulf of Mexico coast of Campeche, south of the city of Campeche. On a map, it sits where the Champotón River meets the sea, with the town's streets laid out along the shore and the river's mouth curving through its southern edge.
The town has a notable place in history: in 1517, the Spanish expedition of Francisco Hernández de Córdoba was defeated by the local Maya here, an event that gave the bay the name Bahía de la Mala Pelea. A small colonial fort, the Fuerte de San Antonio, stands near the river mouth.
A Champotón map poster brings together sea, river and town. The coastline forms a strong line along one side, the river curves inland, and the regular grid of streets fills the space between them. It is a clear, calm map of a coastal town shaped by fishing and by its place on the Gulf.
