Chamrajnagar, also written Chamarajanagar, is the headquarters of Karnataka's southernmost district, close to where the state meets Tamil Nadu and Kerala. The town takes its name from Chamaraja Wodeyar, father of a Mysore ruler, who was born here. On a map the centre is compact, with a few main roads meeting near the old temple quarter before spreading into residential lanes.
The Chamarajeshwara Temple remains the town's best-known landmark, and the streets around it have the tighter texture of an older settlement. Beyond, the pattern loosens into newer layouts and cultivated land. The wider district is known for its forests and hills, including the Biligiriranga Hills and parts of the landscape around Bandipur, which frame the town in the distance.
