Valley-bound roads
Roads in this region generally follow valleys and river courses, so the main lines on the map tend to curve with the terrain rather than follow a grid.

Changam-ch’on Map Poster & Print
Changam-ch’on is listed as a settlement in South Hamgyong province, in the north-east of North Korea. In this region steep mountain ranges descend toward a narrow coastal plain on the East Sea. Reliable detailed information about the place is scarce, and open map data may show only part of its street network, so any map of it is necessarily a simplified view.
The landscape does make the importance of terrain clear. In this part of the country, towns and villages usually follow valley floors and river courses. Roads and railways thread along the lowest ground, with hills rising on either side. Farmland occupies the flatter strips, and built-up areas tend to be compact rather than sprawling.
A Changam-ch’on map poster is therefore a quieter, more abstract piece than a map of a major capital. It shows the lines that are recorded, the roads, waterways and settlement blocks, within the open space of the surrounding landscape. For someone with a personal or family connection to the region, that simple outline can carry considerable meaning.

Compact built-up area
Mapped buildings and streets form a relatively compact cluster. Much of the poster is left as open space, which draws attention to the surrounding landscape.
East Sea hinterland
The settlement lies inland from the coast of South Hamgyong, in country where mountain slopes and river valleys shape how people and roads are distributed.
