Chengxiang is the seat of Wuxi County in the northeastern corner of Chongqing, deep in mountainous country near the Daba range. The town sits where the valley opens just enough for building, and the map shows it squeezed between steep slopes. Streets run parallel to the river, and the urban area thins into a single road wherever the valley narrows.
The river is the organising line of the whole place. It winds through the town, and bridges link the two banks at intervals, each one a visible crossing on the map. Farther downstream, the valley continues towards the Yangtze region and the gorges that made this part of China well known, while the surrounding peaks leave little room for anything but the valley floor.
