Valley-floor streets
The main streets run along the lowest ground between hills. This gives the centre an elongated, slightly curving outline that is easy to recognise.

Chenshi Map Poster & Print
Chenshi is a town in the western part of Chongqing municipality, in the rolling hill country of the eastern Sichuan Basin. The land is rarely flat for long here. From above, the town fits into a valley, with the main streets on the lowest ground and smaller lanes climbing the slopes on either side. The plan bends and branches rather than forming a grid.
The countryside around the town has been shaped by long farming on uneven ground. Terraced fields, ponds and scattered farmhouses cover the hills, and on a detailed map this appears as a delicate network of paths and tracks that follow the contours. Larger regional roads cut straighter lines through the same terrain, often in long curves or along embankments.
A Chenshi map poster suits anyone drawn to places where geography is written directly into the street plan. The compact centre, the roads leaving town along the valleys and the intricate pattern of rural paths make a composition with plenty of detail but no clutter. It works as a portrait of the kind of hill town that makes up much of this part of China.

Terraced countryside
The hillsides around the town are worked into terraces and small fields, which appear on the map as fine, closely spaced tracks following the lie of the land.
Ponds and water
Small ponds and channels are scattered through the farmland. Their soft, rounded shapes contrast with the linear roads and paths.
