Chifeng is a city in the southeast of Inner Mongolia, China, where farmland gives way to steppe and hills. On the map, its districts spread out along a broad river valley, with wide modern avenues and large blocks laid out on the flat ground. Hills rise around the edges and limit how far the city can extend.
The name Chifeng means Red Peak, after a reddish hill near the city known as Hongshan. That hill also gave its name to the Hongshan culture, a Neolithic civilisation first identified in this area and known for its carved jade objects. Chifeng is now one of the largest cities in Inner Mongolia.
