Contamana Map Poster & Print
Contamana is the capital of Ucayali Province in the Loreto region of Peru, on the banks of the Ucayali River in the lowland Amazon. There is no road link to the rest of the country, so the river and a small airfield connect it to the outside world. On a map, the town appears as a tidy grid of blocks laid out behind the riverbank.
The Ucayali is one of the main headwaters of the Amazon, and here it is wide, slow and constantly shifting. Its meanders, sandbars and oxbow lakes create the most striking shapes on the sheet, and they change from season to season as the water rises and falls. The town itself keeps the regular pattern of streets and blocks found in many Peruvian settlements.
A Contamana map poster sets that orderly grid against the fluid geometry of the river and the forest around it. Beyond the last streets there are only tracks, streams and wide unbroken stretches of forest, which appear as open space on the print. The contrast between human order and natural movement gives the composition its character.

Riverside grid
Streets are laid out in regular blocks behind the waterfront, a compact rectilinear pattern that contrasts sharply with the curves of the river.
Oxbow lakes
Around the river, cut-off meanders survive as crescent-shaped lakes, pale curved forms that record the river's former paths across the floodplain.
