Cuautla lies in the eastern part of Morelos, in a warm valley south of the volcanic highlands. The Cuautla River runs north to south along the town, and the old colonial grid stays close to it. Newer neighbourhoods spread outward over the valley floor, where sugar cane and other crops still fill the gaps between built-up areas.
The town has a major place in the Mexican War of Independence. In 1812, José María Morelos and his insurgents withstood a royalist siege here for more than two months. A century later, the region was central to Emiliano Zapata's revolution, and his remains rest beneath a monument in Cuautla.
The area is also known for its spring-fed bathing places, which have drawn visitors from Mexico City for generations. A Cuautla map poster shows the river line, the regular centre and the looser growth around it, all under the long view of Popocatépetl.
