Debrecen is Hungary's second-largest city. It grew up on the open Great Hungarian Plain, with no river or hill to shape it. The result on a map is a city organised around roads rather than terrain: a long central axis, rings of boulevards and residential districts spreading evenly in every direction across flat ground.
At the heart of that axis stands the Reformed Great Church, the building behind Debrecen's old nickname, the Calvinist Rome. In 1849, during the revolution against Habsburg rule, the Hungarian Declaration of Independence was proclaimed there. From the church square a tram line runs north toward Nagyerdő, the Great Forest, where the university's main building faces a wide park.
That green area to the north gives a Debrecen map poster its balance. Dense blocks gather in the south and centre, then give way to curving paths and open woodland, with a stadium and spa buildings set among the trees. Beyond the city edge the plain continues toward the Hortobágy, the grassland that has long defined this corner of eastern Hungary.
