Décines-Charpieu lies on the eastern side of the Lyon metropolitan area, where dense suburbs begin to open into flat plain. From above, the town is a mix of residential streets, older village cores and newer developments, bordered to the north by the Canal de Jonage and the lakes and green areas along the Rhône.
Since 2016 the town has been home to the Groupama Stadium, the ground of Olympique Lyonnais, which appears on the map as a large oval surrounded by access roads, car parks and a tram connection towards central Lyon. It is the clearest landmark in the frame.
