Diepenbeek is in the province of Limburg in Flanders, directly south-east of Hasselt. From above, it looks more like a green suburb than a compact town. There is a modest centre around the church, and streets lined with detached houses run out into fields, woods and pasture in a loose, branching pattern.
The municipality is home to the main campus of Hasselt University, which appears on the map as a distinct group of large buildings, car parks and green space, very different from the village streets around it. The Demer river flows through the area in a low, damp valley, and its course and the adjacent meadows form a gentle band across the land.
