Dondo lies in Sofala Province, a short distance inland from the port city of Beira. From above, it reads as a corridor town. The main road and the railway heading west from the coast run straight through it, and most of the settlement has grown along these two routes. Blocks thin out quickly into cultivated land and low, wet ground.
The surrounding terrain is part of the flat plain near the Pungwe estuary, so the map has almost no contour drama. What it offers instead is texture. There are irregular lanes between plots, a denser core near the junctions, and a scatter of tracks that fade into fields. In black and white this gives a loose, hand-drawn quality you rarely see in planned cities.
Dondo's place on the Beira corridor, the transport link between the Indian Ocean coast and the interior of southern Africa, explains much of its shape. The region was also hit hard by Cyclone Idai in 2019. A Dondo map poster shows a town defined less by monuments than by the routes that pass through it and the people who settled beside them.
