River junction
Several major waterways meet at the northern tip of the island. On the map they form broad, pale bands that frame the old town and give the city its distinctive outline.

Dordrecht Map Poster & Print
Dordrecht occupies an island surrounded by water: the Oude Maas, the Beneden-Merwede, the Noord and the Dordtse Kil all meet around it. The oldest part of the city lies at the northern point, where the rivers converge, and from above it is a compact tangle of harbours, quays and narrow streets. Newer districts spread south across the flat polder land.
Dordrecht received city rights in 1220, which makes it the oldest city in the province of Holland. In 1618 and 1619 it hosted the Synod of Dort, a major gathering of the Reformed churches. The massive tower of the Grote Kerk still dominates the skyline, and the Biesbosch national park lies to the east.
A Dordrecht map poster makes the water the main subject: wide rivers on every side, inner harbours cutting into the old town, and bridges tying the island to the mainland. In black and white, the city's island shape stands out with unusual clarity.

Old harbours
The historic centre is threaded with small harbours and quays. Their narrow basins cut into the street pattern and show how closely the city has always lived with the water.
Polder districts
South of the centre, newer neighbourhoods spread over flat reclaimed land. Their more regular layout contrasts with the intricate medieval core near the rivers.
