Eberswalde lies northeast of Berlin in Brandenburg, laid out along the Finow valley, a channel carved by meltwater at the end of the last ice age. Because the town follows the valley, it is long and narrow from above, running roughly east to west. Railway lines, main roads and the old Finow Canal all run parallel to one another. Dense forest presses in on both sides and marks the edges very clearly.
The Finow Canal, opened in the early seventeenth century and rebuilt later, is among the oldest artificial waterways still in use in Germany. Nearby, the Oder–Havel Canal leads to the Niederfinow boat lifts, where ships are raised and lowered in giant troughs. Eberswalde is also known for forestry. Its forestry academy, founded in 1830, lives on as a university focused on sustainability.
