El Triunfo lies in the east of Guayas Province, on Ecuador's flat coastal plain where it begins to meet the foothills of the Andes. From above, the town is a regular grid of streets laid out along the main highway. It has a clear central area, and newer blocks spread outward in straight lines toward the surrounding plantations.
The town sits on an important route linking Guayaquil with the highlands around Cuenca, and much of its life is tied to that road and to farming. The surrounding lowlands are planted with crops typical of coastal Ecuador, including bananas, cacao and sugar cane, and rivers and irrigation channels cross the countryside.
