Elgin is the main town of Moray in northeast Scotland, a few miles inland from the Moray Firth. Its medieval plan still sets the shape of the centre: a long High Street running east to west, with narrow closes and wynds branching off at right angles like the teeth of a comb.
The River Lossie curves around the north side of the town. At the eastern end of the High Street stand the ruins of Elgin Cathedral, once known as the Lantern of the North and famously burned in 1390 by the Wolf of Badenoch. Lady Hill, a small rise at the western end with a monument on top, marks the old castle site.
Newer housing spreads south and west, and the A96 bypasses the centre on its way between Aberdeen and Inverness. On an Elgin map poster the old spine stays easy to pick out, framed by the river's bends and the green space around the cathedral grounds.

The River Lossie loops around the north of the centre. Its curves are lined with parkland and paths, giving the map a soft northern boundary.
