Elmina Map Poster & Print
Elmina lies on the Central Region coast of Ghana, west of Cape Coast. Its map is shaped by water: the Benya Lagoon cuts in from the sea and separates the old town from the land to the north, while a busy fishing harbour sits at the lagoon's mouth. The streets of the old town are dense and irregular, pressed onto a narrow strip between lagoon and ocean.
Elmina Castle, built by the Portuguese in 1482 as São Jorge da Mina, stands on the point at the water's edge. It is among the oldest European buildings in sub-Saharan Africa and later became a centre of the Atlantic slave trade. Together with Fort St. Jago on the hill opposite, it is part of a UNESCO World Heritage listing of Ghana's forts and castles.
An Elmina map poster records this layered coastline: the castle's footprint on the headland, the lagoon's curve, the harbour and the tightly packed town. It is a map that carries weight, and many people choose it as a way of remembering the place rather than simply decorating a wall.

Benya Lagoon
The lagoon curves inland behind the town, creating a sheltered harbour for fishing canoes and a natural division between the old quarter and the northern districts.
Fort St. Jago
On the hill across the lagoon, the smaller fort looks back toward the castle, and the two structures frame the harbour on the map.
