Embu das Artes lies on the southwestern edge of Greater São Paulo, where the city's continuous sprawl meets hilly, still partly wooded land. From above, its streets have no single grid. They wind along valleys and around ridges, with dense neighbourhoods on the flatter ground and patches of green where the slopes are steep.
The BR-116 highway, the route south toward Curitiba known as the Régis Bittencourt, cuts through the municipality as a long, strong line. The small historic centre is compact and built around a hilltop square with a colonial Jesuit church. From there, streets fall away in several directions toward the newer districts.
The town is best known for its long-running weekend arts and crafts fair, which fills the old centre with stalls and brought the town its present name. The BR-116 crosses the municipality as a wide, steady line. It is the clearest straight stroke among the town's curving local roads.
