Engels lies on the eastern bank of the Volga, directly opposite Saratov, and on a map the river dominates the composition. The wide expanse of water separates the two cities, and a long road bridge crosses it, drawing a thin line between them. Engels itself spreads over flat land in a fairly regular grid of streets, with industrial zones and residential districts extending away from the river.
The city was once called Pokrovsk and served as the capital of the Volga German Autonomous Republic, which gave it a distinctive history in the region. Nearby, in 1961, Yuri Gagarin landed after the first human spaceflight, and the site is marked by a memorial. A large air base also lies close to the city.
