Esperantina is a town in the north of Piauí, in the country between the state capital Teresina and the Atlantic coast. Its centre is a modest grid of streets around a main square. At the edges the grid loosens into longer roads that run out into farmland and scrub. Like many towns in the region, it grew as a market and service centre for the rural area around it.
The best-known feature nearby is the Cachoeira do Urubu, a broad waterfall on the Longá River. It draws visitors from across Piauí and is protected as an ecological park. On a map the river cuts a winding line through the countryside, a natural counterpoint to the straight streets of the town.
